NRA ‘prepared … to help make sure this never happens again’

The National Rifle Association America has released the following statement – its first since Friday’s shootings that left 20 children and six women dead at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut:

“The National Rifle Association of America is made up of 4 million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.

“Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.

“The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.

“The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, D.C., area on Friday, December 21.”

So are the other over 300 million moms and dads, sons and daughters. Only they’re not foaming at the mouth over their “rights” to buy a machine gun or something.

Cat, I would imagine that the vast majority of NRA members are good citizens who want their rights upheld. It is the leadership that has morphed the organization to a money machine for personal and political gain. I would like an investigation of their tax status.

And neither is the NRA. Nor have they been that I know off. Site an example of official NRA pushing machine gun rights for all.

What they’re saying is that they’ll feel the pulse of their membership and if they lose members, maybe they’ll concede a couple of rounds per clip. But they’ll still be fighting to get guns into the hands of people on the FBI’s terror watch list who haven’t, you know, actually shot anyone but are just helping to mount an armed attack on the United States.

Groucho, there is nothing wrong with the NRA leadership and they have always been in complete compliance with all federal tax laws. Feel free to start a suit if you don’t think so. Should we start sighting the leadership of some of your wacked out leftie lib organizations. Do you real;ly want to go there ?

There ya go, MM just posted a another load of wacked out lib crappola. Show me where they stated any of that in there latest release ? Quit making things up. Your inability to be honest is so telling.

(Legislative) actions speak louder than words. When they stop throwing money at candidates like Louie Gohmert and start backing legislation to ban assault weapons, then they will earn credibility in my eyes. You would think that the NRA would want to be a voice of reason within the gun owning community. The ‘my rights, to hell with public safety’ kooks that run that organization give the sportsman with a few hunting rifles a bad name. Andy made the remark earlier to the effect that its a matter of principle. You advocate for those stockpiling weapons and ammo, because its their ‘right to do so’; no other reason. That’s like my teenage step son saying its ok to flip off a cop, because we have the ‘right to do so’. Me’ism at its grandest folks! My rights are all that matter. Not as if government can balance the rights of individuals with needs to keep people safe. Then you have this crazy notion that we need to arm ourselves to defend against government tyranny. So much for the democratic process and legally casting a ballot. Its bullets over ballots. It’d be funny, if not so scary. Images of Oxford, Mississippi circa 1962 come to mind. I surely hope cooler heads will prevail.

Gee Andy. Looks like you have more than a personal interest in this debate, given you attendance in November at the big gun shindig in Tulsa. Packed to the rafter, was it? Any NRA boys there handing out freebees and signing up members? By the way, how was business at the Bakersfield gun show when you got back? Good money?

T4Y like I’ve said so many times if you are really serious about changing things you should advocate for a Constitutional Convention. Otherwise you’re just pounding sand and flappin you’re lips. Let me repeat, judicial diktat will not get you where you want to go. You have but one way to strike down the 2nd. go for it.
And in the interest of honesty let me state that I am a Life Endowment member of the NRA and contribute substantially to the NRA’s ILA. As strong as your anti NRA feelings seem to be I suggest you join an organization that supports your ideology and contribute.

If the NRA would have come out with a statement the day after the murders, a lot of people would have bitched. So they waited 4 days, and a lot of people are bitching. Typical.

Alright MM,researching my posts and trying guilty trip me eh. Sorry won’t work. Yes packed to the rafters with good Americans most of whom have nothing but contempt for for people like you. And yes the NRA was there and handing out free attendance to new sign ups and I’m proud to say there were plenty of them. And yes the Bakersfield show was a good one. All tables sold out weeks in advance. Better than average attendance an lots of money changing hands for legal purchases. And just so you know The NRA comes to the local show about once a year and always signs up lots of new members. If that bothers you I suggest you and your buds make up some big posters with all kinds of asinine statements and come on down and protest. We always need a little comic relief. You could join up with PETA and hold hands and chant.

We don’t need to eliminate the second ammendment. We need to properly interpret it. It does not guarantee an individuals right to own any and all weapons. Framer’s intent was to sanction state and local policing agencies (militia). It was basically a charter for local law enforcement, not individual ownership. Individual ownership was an evolution of the second amendment, but not its original intent. It was a matter of federalism and state autonomy. STATES were given a right to protect and defend itself against federal intrusion. The second amendment gave teeth to the tenth amendment. Now, the second amentment is not the only amendment that has evolved with changing social conditions and public concerns. We have seen the first amendment evolve. We’ve seen the fourth amendment interpretted and reinterpretted. We’ve even seen amendments abolishing other ammendments (the 18th prohibition followed by the 21st ending prohibition). The constitution is a living, breathing document as interpretted by history. History illustrates that the constitution evolves.

So the same Administration that gave us Fast and Furious is going to handle more gun legislation??
Yes, we are living in a very warped world…

We have been properly interpreting the 2nd since the day is was ratified. And that interpretation has been upheld by the SC since that time. Youy can cherry pick what you think the founders said but it will change nothing. Your argument has been blown open and laid waste to many times to keep track of. Try as you may your only option is a Constitutional Convention. Go for it.
