Details are still sparse, but at least two people were shot. One has been airlifted in critical condition. A few news sources are reporting that there is a person (rumored) already in custody.

The airlifted victim was a student-a male, 11th grade. A teacher was shot and received minor injuries and refused on the spot medical attention. The KC Sheriff will be holding a news conference from the school at noon.

In a gun nut county like Kern, it was bound to happen eventually. NRA will, as usually, will downplay it as ‘no big deal’.

The NRA is just glad it was a shotgun and not an assault rifle.

So, this means we should ban all shotguns now, right?, that’s the liberal answer?

  • Profile picture of milemarker milemarker said 5 months, 1 week ago:

Mach, what is the “conservative” answer?

  • Profile picture of think4yourself think4yourself said 5 months, 1 week ago:

“The NRA is just glad it was a shotgun and not an assault rifle”

Otherwise, it could have been A LOT WORSE!

  • Profile picture of Geoffrey Thorpe Geoffrey Thorpe said 5 months, 1 week ago:

If it had been an assault rifle, the result would have been a lot worse…for the NRA lobbying efforts. News of this shooting broke into coverage of VP Biden’s hearings/conference/news about gun regulations. It would have been the kiss of death for the NRA on this issue if that’s what happened.

And, no, Mach, that’s not the liberal answer. From here, I’d say it’s YOUR answer, since you offered it.

You should wait to hear the answer from conservatism since Mach pits liberalism against, um, something. Thomas Hobbes is standing by for a rendering of Mach’s answer since Mach has now framed the debate in terms of what a liberal would say. The obvious “correct” answer he implies by doing that would be from conservatism which is the natural opponent to liberalism. I look forward to hearing what it is. Mach, the floor is yours.

The firearm was a simple shotgun. This should have ZERO bearing on the discussion on AR’s. Lets keep the differences between Sandy Hook and Taft in proper perspective. One person was critically injured compared to 26 deaths in Connecticut. The violence we are seeing is not some monolythic problem. While guns are typically the chosen weapon in these events, there is a much deeper problem going out there than guns. While certain guns are problematic in terms of the amount of damage they can cause, the root of the problem is we, as a society, have regressed in our ability to mediate conflict and assist others in doing the same. Desperate people commit desperate acts when they perceive there are no other options. Media hasn’t helped with much of the programming focussing on violence and acts of revenge as being the most effective way to cease conflict. When, as a nation, we start to focus more on cooperation over competition, compromise over holding the line, and especially forgiveness over holding grudges, then we will see a decrease in violence with or without gun control.

Mere injury in a murder attempt in a public school. Why should that arouse concern? Yes, we should scoff at this trivial matter. It’s just Taft! Who even lives there! No one of consequence.

Suppose this was the desperate act of kid seeking to end the torment inflicted on him by a bully. Any mitigation there?

Is there, Lamonster? Do we get to shoot a bully?

  • Profile picture of milemarker milemarker said 5 months, 1 week ago:

Ah! Here’s a candidate for, at least, the “not liberal” view.

Mach, does this guy’s attitude in any way reflect the conservative solution? This could narrow things down a bit, I think.

Yeah. Its called school officials growing a spine when it comes to mediating conflict between students rather than just brushing it under the rug to avoid conflict-which they often do. I have a difficult time believing that this kid just woke up one morning and decided to open fire on his tormentors. What were the escalating events?
