I’m not sure this is the place to share this thought, but I didn’t think it was worthy of a new thread. Something that hasn’t been discussed is the impact these events have on the mentally ill population. Many, many people refuse to seek treatment early on for fear of being labeled and stereotyped. Its important that people understand the FACTS about mental illness before just throwing around the label. In general, mentally ill people are NOT violent individuals. They are more likely to be harmed than be the one doing the harm. I’m concerned that this event, like Tucson and Aurora, will be an impedus from people seeking help. The image that comes to so many people’s mind when you say the words ‘mental illness’ are those of dead children. The unintended, indirect consequences of tragedies like this is the increased marginalization of those with mental illness.
