did you know that a 16.9 oz empty water bottle weighs 12.7 grams
We pay 5 cents for every water bottle for recycling

take this into consideration. The government thinks we are all too stupid

1 lb of plastic right now fetches $1 at a recycling center.
There are 128 grams in an ounce, and 16 ounces to a pound
that means there are 2048 grams in a pound, so around 157 bottles in a pound

    what is 157 x .05? $7.85
For every $7.85 cents we spend for a recylcing program, we get 1 dollar back, or roughly 12.5% of what we paid into it
That’s millions of dollars, shoot maybe hundreds of millions of dollars the Govt takes in that is unaccounted for

One ounce is 28.35 grams, not 128. A pound is 453.6 grams.

Perhaps you’re thinking 128 fluid ounces to a gallon.

Recycling consumes energy that costs something, and creates jobs for workers who must be paid.

Conversions were always one of those things that drive me nuts. Especially when it comes to distances, I’m a real bonehead; and it shows if I’m in a foreign country. Still can’t think off-hand what a kilometer or knot to a mile is. How many litres make a gallon? Hell, I don’t know–why can’t the rest of the world just simply be like us and not complicate things?

AD, you are just confusing poor mike, AKA The Professor.

  • Profile picture of limalimamike limalimamike said 6 months ago:

    I stand corrected, Thanks AD
    28.35 x 16 = 453. 6 grams
    roughly 36 bottles per pound.
So for every dlolar we get back, the government pockets 80 cents
That still adds up to a lot of money that is unaccounted for. Granted, it’s not the hundreds of miilions I spoke of first, but any little bit helps when we are buried with hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars of debt, that our state govt basically ignores.

I’m with you mike! Screw the environment! Who cares that plastic, aluminum, and glass are finite resources that are not biodegradable and overflow our landfills! I too damn cheap to pay that extra 60 cents for a 12 pack!

Opportunity for a double benefit here, Mike. Go out on a Saturday once or twice a month and pick up those bottles and cans that others choose not recycle, sell them and pocket the money. At the same time you can make a park or a roadside look a little better. Win win.

  • Profile picture of AndyA AndyA said 6 months ago:

Larry, very little aluminum ends up in land fills.

  • Profile picture of Lamonster Lamonster said 6 months ago:

True. I’ve seen employees at the landfill scouring the daily deposits for recyclables.

  • Profile picture of limalimamike limalimamike said 6 months ago:

Not my point Larry. Did I rail against recycling?
My point is, the CA govt has all these revenue streams, but still wants more. We don’t have a revenue problem, we have a SPENDING problem.

Seeing that CA congress voted to give illegal aliens unemployment, they still don’t get it. For those of you that voted for higher sales tax and prop 30, all you did was extend credit on a maxed out gold card that is over a decade overdue.

Seeing that its a redemption, not a tax most of it goes to overhead. Its not the golden egg you might believe it to be mike. However, everybody DOES pay it and very few people cash in on the redemption (which I think is CRAZY-you paid for it-you might as well get it back) which makes you wonder where the rest of it is going. Interesting point, mike. What happens to all the unredeemed funds?

Yeah, the math you stated did make me go Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm….but not as you intended. Fortunately AD corrected it.

If you are concerned that you are not receiving your full crv amount then you have options. The easiest is to go to a Re-Planet and feed your crv plastics into their machine. The machine credits your crv amount based on the upc. http://replanetusa.com/

California law requires that for 50 or fewer containers you have the right to be reimbursed your crv by having the recycling attendant count your containers. http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/bevcontainer/

quote from the website “Did you know there’s a way to get your beverage container recycling refunds on a per-container basis instead of by weight? That’s right, California law allows you the option of being paid based on count instead of weight for up to 50 empty beverage containers of each material type.”

“The government thinks we are all too stupid” I disagree the government expects you to educate yourself on the way the program works. They have made all of the information you need available on an easily accessible website.
